West Michigan Wednesday: Birthday Palooza!

One of the things I love most about my home is the location! I love living in West Michigan and enjoy many activities around town. I wanted to create a series that explores some of the great things that this area has to offer.

I have had so much fun celebrating my birthday week with family and friends! This year, I decided to celebrate all week by visiting some of my local favorites!!

Here are some of the highlights:

Hearthstone Bistro

Pronto Pups

Planetarium at MCC
BernieO’s Pizza
Curry Kitchen
Kazumi Japanese Steakhouse

18th Amendment Distillery

Birthday Bonanza: Easy Pom Pom Bunting

Kurts birthday was on Tuesday and I want to continue the celebration by sharing a quick project that I whipped up to spruce up the house in honor of his birth.

I have already showed you the subway art and balloon wreath that I use for our birthdays ever year. Well, this year, I wanted to add something  new and festive and thought it would be fun to make a birthday bunting using pom poms.

It was super easy! If you want to be fancy, you could make your own poms using yarn, but ain’t nobody got time for all that! I just used 3 bags of pom poms that I picked up from Hobby Lobby, a needle and thread. I just threaded the pom poms onto the string and then taped them up!

I loved the bunting in the dining room so much, I decided to whip one up for the living room too!
Do you have any birthday decor traditions? Have you tried to make your own poms?

Birthday Bonanza: Giant Balloons and Tassel DIY

Today is Kurt’s birthday and to celebrate I wanted to share a tutorial with you!! I already showed you how I decorated the dining room to celebrate Kurt’s day-o-birth, but I wanted the fun to spill out through the rest of the house too!

I picked up these HUGE balloons from Party City. They are 36″ and to give you a frame of reference, a “normal” balloon is 12″ These puppies are out of control! I originally wanted three, because according to Mel Brooks everything is funnier in threes! But there was no way I could have gotten them all home in one trip.  If you want to attempt this project, I suggest making sure these fit in your car! It was a tight fit to cram these into my little Vibe!

I tied the balloons to our parsons chairs in the living room and decided that they needed a little something more! Enter the tassel project. I have been seeing pictures all over my favorite blogs and on Pinterest featuring confetti filled balloons and tasseled balloons. I had already run all my errands, so I set out to complete this project with random stuff from my house. I used two colors of tissue paper that I had picked up to wrap Kurt’s present, scissors, and green/white bakers twine.

First, I just took the tissue paper and folded it in half to make a nice long strip. Then I cut strips all along the length of the tissue paper about an inch or so apart. No need to be precise on this, my cuts were all kinds of wonky and you totally can’t tell. You will just want to leave a little bit at the top where your fold is to keep everything attached.

Then I folded my strip in half and tied some bakers twine in the middle and ended up with this fun tassel. I just used the twine to tie the tassel onto the balloon. I repeated this process with the second color and staggered it further down the ribbon, and then did the whole thing again with balloon number two.

If you wanted to be fancy, you could probably use cloth, more colors, or even switch out the crinkle ribbon they give you for something a little more heavy duty (ribbon, cloth, ect). However, this worked just fine for me in a pinch!

I will be taking a break from birthday fun tomorrow but I will return with a bunting project on Thursday! Do you have any birthday home decor traditions at your house? Have you tried cramming giant balloons into your car?

Birthday Bonanza: Subway Art and Balloon Wreath

Kurt’s birthday is tomorrow and I love breaking out the decorations! I decided to gussy up the ikea shelves in the dining room with my old standby birthday decorations.

I love this subway art by eighteen25. I pull it out for every birthday. To get this print, just click on the link. While you are there, be sure to check out the rest of their subway art, it is SO cute!

A few years back, I made this balloon wreath using this tutorial from HowDoesShe. It is really simple to make, all you need is a TON of balloons, a straw wreath, and greening pins!

I also grabbed some balloons from Party City and tossed them on our entryway table for a cheery welcome as Kurt comes through the door! Do you have any birthday decor traditions in your home?
