West Michigan Wednesday: Morning Star Cafe in Grand Haven

One of the things I love most about my home is the location! I love living in West Michigan and enjoy many activities around town. I wanted to create a series that explores some of the great things that this area has to offer.

West Michigan Wednesday

Happy New Years Eve! This week I wanted to share my favorite breakfast place in West Michigan, Morning Star Cafe in Grand Haven.

This restaurant is locally owned and operated and features a fabulous breakfast and lunch menu with Southwestern influences. The decor is so bright and cheerful that it is impossible to leave without a smile on your face. I adore the stuffed French Toast that I had on my last visit. So, if you’re looking for somewhere to eat tomorrow morning after ringing in the New Year, be sure to stop by and try it out!

Quick and Simple New Years Decor

Today I’m going to share how I update my holiday decor to transition from Christmas into New Years. I have been doing this for years and I love how easy it is.

I adore the subway art (and all of the printables, really) at eighteen25 and their New Years print is no exception! I have an 11×14 frame with a 8×10 gray matte that I use for my subway art. I have every holiday printed and I store them all in the frame, so switching out each season is a breeze! I love popping in my printable and adding a few pillar candles for a little bit of glam.

I left up my jingle bell decor because it’s just too pretty to put it away yet.

I really like how this turned out and it only took me a couple of minutes to put it all together. I think next year, I may add in my Pottery Barn pocket watch clock. How cute would that be!? In fact, I may go add it right now.

Do any of you decorate for New Years? Are your Christmas decorations still up?

My New Dishwasher

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas filled with love and great company! I was able to get home to spend time with my family, see a movie, and do a little visiting.

I have been itching to share some of the updates that have been happening behind the scenes at my house! This year for Christmas, my mom was SO kind and got me a brand new dishwasher! It was delivered a couple of weeks ago and I am LOVING it!

I don’t think I’ve ever showed my old dishwasher here, so I snapped a few pictures the evening before it was delivered. Ah yes, Old Yeller.

old yellow

Yup, my old dishwasher was old and quite yellowed on the outside. Lets not even talk about the inside. So gross. I’m pretty sure it may have been making me sick. My old dishwasher was SO loud when it ran. Daisy would get very scared by the noise and try to lay underneath me or climb into the most ridiculous places in my home (I have found her in the laundry hamper, in the dresser drawers, and she has even climbed up into the shelves of my closet).

My new dishwasher, by contrast, is a gorgeous stainless steel design by Maytag. We picked it up at Home Depot on sale and they did the install within two weeks and even hauled Old Yeller away.

There is loads of space inside! It has a garbage disposal function built inside which grinds up any food that the detergent doesn’t break down. There is a sanitizing function and my dishes come out sparkling every time. I didn’t realize how poorly Old Yeller was cleaning my dishes until I ran the new one for the first time. What a difference! Of course, it is also MUCH quieter which Daisy loves. She is still terrified of the kitchen, but at least I can run my dishwasher without sending my dog into an anxiety attack.

It is just so pretty! I can’t wait to upgrade the rest of my appliances a little bit at a time!

Merry Christmas from Heart Haven Home!

I didn’t get a chance to send out Christmas cards again this year. If I had, I bet they would have looked something like this!

Hope you are all able to enjoy the holiday and spend time with friends, family, and loved ones!

HeartHavenHolidays: DIY Sharpie Mugs

Alrighty friends, it is Christmas Eve and we are in the home stretch! I decided to squeeze in one last DIY project and I wanted to share it with you before the holiday so we are skipping the West Michigan Wednesday post for this week. Today I’m going to share my take on the DIY sharpie mugs that I’ve been seeing all over Pinterest! I think these mugs could be a great last minute gift idea, so I thought it would be best to share it now!

DIY sharpie mugs. Use Oil Based sharpies to make them hold up to washing.

This project seemed pretty straightforward but there are a few tips and tricks to make your mugs turn out great and stand the test of time/washing. Here is what you’ll need for this project:

  • Cheap white mugs from the dollar store/grocery store.
  • OIL BASED (this is SO important to be dish soap safe) Sharpie Markers. I picked up mine from Michaels.
  • Rubbing Alcohol, Qtips, Paper Towel to fix mistakes
  • An Oven 🙂

Start off by pre-heating your oven to 350 degrees. Use your OIL BASED sharpie to draw your design on the mug and get it perfect. If you make a mistake, don’t worry! Just use the rubbing alcohol to remove anything that you don’t want to keep. After you get your designs finalized, just pop your mug into the oven for about a half an hour. Turn off the oven but allow the mugs to cool down inside so that they don’t go through a drastic temperature change and shatter. (I had this happen with a glass casserole dish once! It was terrible!) There you go! In order to preserve your mugs it is best to just hand wash them. I may try sending mine through the dishwasher, just to see what happens. I’ll let you know if I do!

The designs I choose were all pretty simple. I am loving gold right now so I used a gold sharpie on all of my mugs. The first one is just a simple gold dot pattern. I love the old Kate Spade gold dot design (seems like its kinda phasing out, but I’m still a huge fan!) and this is a great way to get the look for less! You can use stickers to get your dots perfectly shaped, but I sort of love my wonky dots. They have character. 🙂 I think this could be a great last minute Christmas Gift for a friend/coworker/neighbor. Just fill the mug with some holiday treats and candy and you’re good to go!

Next up is my Morning Joy cup. I love it because it is a fun nod to the name of my home and a favorite bible verse. Its also a cheeky nod to that first cup of hot cocoa/tea/coffee in the morning… pure joy. I just added little dots along the top and the bottom for a little more character. You could personalize the cup with a favorite quote, name, or preserve the sweet handwriting of your children.

DIY sharpie mug for the tea lovers out there. Love the gold oil based sharpies.

The last design is so simple and probably my favorite. I just drew a little tea bag shape with a heart in the middle. I love drinking a cup of warm tea when I’m not feeling well (and all the time, lets be real) and I think this could be a great gift for a sick friend who is stuck at home this winter. Just fill the mug with your favorite teas, some cough drops, and maybe some kleenex.

I didn’t share my final mug with you because I’m not sure if I’m going to keep it. I haven’t baked it yet because I’m still not sure on the design. I was trying to make scrabble letters that spelled “cocoa” but I couldn’t get them to look right. I may just scrap the whole thing and draw more dots. hahaha!

Have any of you tried making DIY sharpie mugs? Are you doing last minute shopping/crafting today?
