DIY Decor: Painted Step Stool

updating an old step stool with fresh paint

My driver’s license says I’m 5’1″ but I wore tall shoes that day. I bet they would let me put whatever I wanted to on there within reason. My point is… I’m pretty stinking short. Step stools are a necessity in my life every single day. It’s fine, I’m used to it. #shortgirlproblems. Most of the step stools I’ve owned in the past are these large, bulky, plastic things that I tote from room to room. When I bought my house, there was a lovely little wooden step stool sitting in the corner. It was banged up, a little discolored, and kind of perfect!

This adorable little stool is the perfect height to reach my every-day items in the kitchen. I have tall kitchen cabinets that reach all the way to the ceiling and, on my tip toes, even the second shelf is a stretch. This little beauty needed some TLC so I thought I would give back just a little and spruce her up a bit while still leaving some of the character that I love.

divine color paint in starlight

I picked up a sample pot of the Divine Color paint from Target in the color Starlight which is a beautiful dusty lavender. I used a foam craft brush and applied two thin/even coats.

I have never used this paint before and I have to say, I am really impressed. The color selection is gorgeous to start with and this display has caught my eye every time I walk by in the store. I had planned on using a thicker acrylic craft paint for this project but I actually ended up loving the thin, water based constancy of this paint. Using a water based/wall paint made application and clean up a breeze. I wanted a nice crisp line between the paint and the natural wood and it was so easy to achieve without taping anything off. Target also sells the Divine Color paint by the gallon so you could use it for a whole room! There are definitely mixed reviews for the paint online, but my experience with this small project was positive.

painted step stool update

The dusty lavender looks so pretty with the natural wood tones. I’m debating bringing the color (or another color like gold or white) down to cover the edge of the top and leaving the legs bare, but for now I love this look. I know it will get dinged up over time, because this stool is already well loved. But this was such an easy project, I don’t think I will mind touchups down the line!

I love taking items that I use every day and making them a little more pretty. Have you done any quick projects lately?

The Friday Five: Man Cave Makeover

Friday Five

I was contacted by Man Crates: Gifts for Men to be a part of their “Man Cave Makeover” campaign. The challenge is to find items to spruce up a dull Man Cave and make it as special as your guy.  Man Crates is a really cool website that specializes in finding that perfect gift for the hard to shop for man in your life: dads, brothers, friends, boyfriends, or husbands. These creative gift sets come packaged in a wooden crate and require the supplied crowbar to pry them open. There is a crate for everyone: gamers, beer lovers, sports fans, and your ever-prepared zombie survivalist. So stinking cool!!

For today’s “Friday Five” I’m going to share my five picks to take your Man Cave from drab to fab. Just because the guy in your life enjoys beers with his bros, answering The Call (of Duty), or a bidding on a high stakes game of poker doesn’t mean that his space can’t also be a sanctuary. Guys, I think it’s important to fill your home with items that you really love and a man cave shouldn’t have to sacrifice form for function! Here are five great gifts for your guy’s Man Cave Makeover!

Bring in a unique statement piece like this wine bottle chandelier from Pottery Barn. While it is currently sold out online, there are a ton of DIY tutorials for similar projects on Pinterest. This fun chandelier would add light and life to your cave. You could make one with your guy’s favorite brands or sentimental bottles from special/fun events.

Snag a projector like this one on Amazon to make his games and movies larger than life. There is nothing like blasting away bad guys and talking smack from the comfort of your own cave.

Add fun, personalized artwork, like these James Bond posters I found on Etsy. I love minimalist movie posters, there are a ton of options available to reflect your guy’s personality! Personalized artwork is a great way to make a space feel special. I love the graphic design of the minimalist movie posters, they get the point across while maintaining a cohesive design that isn’t too distracting.

Man Caves can be in your basement, garage, shed, extra room, Ect. Many times our homes don’t have a place for a full bar. Swap out the girly bar carts I mentioned on Monday for my favorite rustic/industrial cart stocked with his favorites: whiskey, beer, wine or liquor. Man Caves don’t have a reputation for being super kid-friendly so this is a great option for those of you who want an excuse to buy a bar cart but worry about little hands knocking everything over.

Finally, add in some fun/quirky details like these Rock, Paper, Scissor dice from Pottery Barn… you know, because he makes decisions like a classy adult. Or you could stock up on these shotgun shell coasters to make protecting the furniture just as badass as your favorite dude.

UGH. Ok, I know that was six, but I couldn’t pick!! Oh well, Bonus!

You guys know I love living in my “Bachelorette Pad” and so this blog and my pinterest boards are full of girly ideas and inspiration. However, it was SO much fun to switch it up for a minute!  What items would you pick to makeover your Man Cave?

Ok, also: What Man Crate do you want to pry open? Because let’s be real, I definitely want one for myself!!! I can’t choose!

West Michigan Wednesday: The Hearthstone

One of the things I love most about my home is the location! I love living in West Michigan and enjoy many activities around town. I wanted to create a series that explores some of the great things that this area has to offer.

West Michigan Wednesday

The Hearthstone Bistro Bar and Grill located in Muskegon is, hands down, my favorite restaurant in West Michigan… maybe anywhere. Thats a bold statement because I love a lot of places. I haven’t tried a single item on the menu that I didn’t love: soups, salad, pasta, or steak. You name it, it’s great.

I also love the atmosphere, it is warm and cozy with the coolest fireplace table I have ever seen. There is also a terrace with outdoor seating if the weather permits.

I love taking advantage of the daily specials offered at The Hearthstone. On Wednesdays, they have a great “Pasta Pasta ” deal where you can get two pastas and two salads for $24! I know, right!? My favorite is “Two Moo Monday” with two bistro steaks and salad for $24. Honestly, you can’t beat the price on those specials and the food is seriously amazing!

I am also a big fan of the soup and I love getting a bowl “to go” for lunch. My favorite is the Wisconsin Cheddar Soup with popcorn. It is the Best. Thing. Ever. In house, it comes garnished with popcorn and cheese balls. When I get take out, I add my own from home and it is still fantastic.

If you’re looking for something to do for dinner tonight, check out “Pasta Pasta Wednesday” at the Hearthstone. And if you’re ever in the mood for steak on a Monday, come Two Moo with me! I promise you won’t regret it!

Pretty Bar Carts

Bar carts are back and have been for a while now. I’m a little late to the party, I’ll admit it. When I first started seeing these styled cars popping up everywhere, I just didn’t get it. Sure, they are pretty at a party but why do you need your booze on display 24/7? However, they just haven’t gone away. These vintage/glam carts look like they’ll be on trend for a while and I decided to take a closer look.

These are gorgeous, right? And then I saw this beautiful “brunch” cart over on Style Me Pretty Living and my brain just about exploded.

via

This opens up a world of possibilities! For example, check out this sweet coffee cart from A Beautiful Mess.

via

I am not a big coffee drinker myself, but I love the idea of styling a cart with tea or cocoa. Imagine a cocoa bar with peppermint sticks and a variety of marshmallows… so cute! I have a funny, little corner in my small kitchen where I have envisioned adding a kitchen cart of some kind for extra storage/prep area. I am, however, falling in love with the idea of a more versatile bar cart. Bar carts typically have a smaller footprint and would be so easy to change out or move around for entertaining. These carts are also on trend which makes them so easy to find in a variety of styles/price point to fit your home decor and budget. Even Target is currently carrying a great option at the moment.

via

I am feeling drawn to a more rustic look like this one from Overstock.com.

via

I.Can’t.Even. It is just SO pretty. I love the removable tray on the top, rustic wood finish, and dark hardware. My kitchen cabinets currently have black colonial-style hardware and this cart would be such a great accent piece!  I think I have finally jumped aboard the bar cart wagon

How do you feel about the bar cart trend?

Beautiful Fall Blooms

Last week I shared the Dahlias that I picked up from the farmer’s market. I really enjoy keeping fresh flowers in my home so, as it cooled off this week, I brought in some happy fall blooms to cheer things up. I absolutely love the warm/saturated colors in this arrangement. So pretty!
