The Friday Five: My Big Ticket Furniture Wish List

It is almost the end of August and I can’t believe it! This month flew by and we will be heading into fall before you know it. It really doesn’t seem like I have been in my house since June. It has been slow going as I settle into my new home. I have avoided any large purchases so far because I want to give some thought to the items I will look at and use every day. I have such great visions for Morning Joy but I am taking my time to gather items that I really love rather than rushing out to buy filler pieces all at once. Today I wanted to share five of the big ticket/furniture items that are on the wish list for my new home.

Friday Five

The first item on my wish list is this sweet bistro pedestal table from West Elm. I love everything about this table. Each one is carved from a Mango tree and it is such a unique and lovely piece. I think it would be so cute to have this table live in a dinning nook in the corner of my formal living room with a couple of sleek parson chairs and fresh flowers, of course.

I have been pining over this next item for a LONG time. I adore the large scale Devon Mirror from Z Gallerie and I think it would be such a gorgeous statement piece to hang above my bed. I love the chunky sunburst design and the combination of silver and gold detailing which totally mesh with my plan in my bedroom.

The painted bar stools from my first house are probably my favorite project to date. I have been keeping my eyes peeled for a killer pub table to make them pop in my new casa. I adore a rustic wood finish to contrast with the modern metal and industrial design of the stools. In my wildest home decor dreams I would want to make a special place in my house for the 1900s Boulangerie Counter Table from Restoration Hardware. We would live happily ever after. Le sigh. I seriously love everything about it.

On the more reasonably priced side of things, I have been on the lookout for a small scale white desk to go in my office space in the basement. I am loving this one from Target. The x slats on the side add a nice bit of character and it is the same design as my teal entry way table.  I think this desk would be so cute paired with one of these chairs, also from Target. The nailhead detail on the chair is fantastic! Since they would obviously be a set, this counts as one item. Just sayin’ … it is my list, I do what I want.

I would love to have a beautiful settee in my formal living room. I have a large picture window original to my 1920’s home and I think it is a shame to block the light with furniture. I think a low/no back settee is the perfect, “instant window seat” answer. I have been checking out  a few options at Target. However, if I’m going to be honest, my dream decor solution is the Clara Apartment Sofa from Pottery Barn. I love the low back/small foot print for my tiny space. The sculpted wooden legs and tufted back add an elegant touch. I also really enjoy the fabric customization options available through Pottery Barn.

So there you have it… my top five big ticket dream furniture items! I’m going to keep saving my pennies to fill my home with beautiful pieces that I love. In the meantime, what items would you love to have in your home if budget wasn’t an issue?

West Michigan Wednesday: The Pump House

One of the things I love most about my home is the location! I love living in West Michigan and enjoy many activities around town. I wanted to create a series that explores some of the great things that this area has to offer.

This week I cannot get enough of The Pump House. It is a super cute frozen yogurt bar nestled in downtown Grand Haven right across the street from Chinook Pier.  This is a locally owned business which originally opened in Grand Rapids and they expanded with this second location in June.

I am a big fan of frozen yogurt bars and there have been several opening up around West Michigan. I honestly love them all. Like every fro-yo bar I have been to, there is a wide variety of yogurt flavors to choose from and even more toppings to make each visit unique and fun!

I love playing with the toppings and trying different varieties! They also have locally made fudge available on the toppings bar and for sale in the shop.

However, what makes The Pump House stand out for me is the decor. It is just so stinking cute and functional!  There is even a photo booth! So adorable, I can’t even stand it! I really enjoy the overall layout and design. The set up encourages you to walk around the entire space and it feels a lot less like an assembly line at a typical fro-yo bar.  The checkout and toppings island floats in the middle of the space and there are several seating zones around to enjoy your frozen yogurt creation and chat with friends. I love the colorful stool/table combos and the painted adirondack swings with window views.

I really enjoyed my visit this week. I love mixing fruits, nuts, and chocolate for the perfect mix! So Yummy!

DIY Decor: How To Paint Laminate Furniture Without Sanding

hot to paint laminate furniture without sanding

Today I am going to share the first big project that I have tackled at my new house. I decided to paint my bathroom vanity white… the easy lazy way! I have been so busy the past few months and so I have not had much time to work on any large scale projects. I decided that the first room on my to do list was going to be the bathroom on the main floor. The previous owners had made some fantastic upgrades throughout the home and there are only a few minor changes that I want to make to have the bathroom feel like my own. I previously shared the installation of my new rainfall shower head which I am still LOVING! Next, it was time to address the dark vanity and mirror.

I want my home to feel bright and airy. While the dark, cherry wood finish was pretty… it was getting fairly worn and did not do any favors for the small size of my bathroom. I decided to paint the furniture a crisp, bright white to help open things up and give a spa-like feeling to the room. The vanity and mirror were a laminate finish and I decided to go with “Behr’s Premium Plus Paint and Primer in One” in a semi-gloss finish to get great, long lasting coverage. I used the un-tinted ultra pure white, knowing that I could always take it back to home depot and get it re-tinted for free if the color was too harsh.

I love this paint! First, I tried to lightly sand the vanity on one of the corners facing the wall and it looked TERRIBLE. I decided to go big or go home and began to paint away. The first coat was terrifying. I used a 2in angled brush and a small craft brush to get inside the cracks. No prep, just minimal stress about ruining my house forever. However, just four thin/even coats later and it was looking beautiful!

I found these cool knobs at Anthropologie on clearance for $2.99 and I couldn’t pass them up! I am in LOVE with them!

However, after I took these photos, I realized that everything else in the room is silver. I am totally fine mixing metals in my home but it was looking a little odd. I made a quick trip out to the store and picked up these silver based knobs and all was right in my matchy-matchy universe

Don’t worry, the original gold accented lovelies already have a home in my hallway so it wasn’t a wasted sale.

Wow! It is amazing the difference that paint can make. My bathroom already feels so much bigger and brighter.

Review: Ryobi Cordless String Trimmer/Edger

ryobi weed wacker review

Yard work used to scare the crap out of me. I have said previously that I am not an “outdoorsy” kind of girl, but living alone I have had to learn to do it myself. I received a battery powered Ryobi weed wacker as a housewarming present (at the first house) from my parents. But, I finally had to learn how to use it this summer.  On Father’s Day this year, my dad bought and planted 5 plants at my house (2 hydrangeas, 2 rhododendron, and a Japanese maple in case you’re wondering) then he mowed my lawn because I didn’t have my reel mower yet, and then he taught me how to use my weed wacker. Below is a snapshot my mom grabbed on her phone. I promise I don’t always do yard work in a dress… only when I’m feeling fancy. 😉

fancy yard work

I was completely surprised at how easy it was to use! I had made any kind of yard work out to be very difficult. I love that it is battery operated so there aren’t any pull strings. The battery is compatible with the Ryobi One+ System which is fantastic if I want to expand my collection down the line.  This trimmer is quite lightweight which is great for a petite gal like myself! The face can tilt up with a button and it works great for edging as well. For my needs at the moment, the regular flat trimmer works just fine.

Ryobi cordless weed wacker

I know this isn’t the most scientific review if you’re a hardcore/outdoorsy/powertool/Tim the Toolman type of person. But basically, if you’re in the market for a user friendly, lightweight, battery operated trimmer I would definitely check out the Ryobi line. Plus its a super cute lime green color. I didn’t know power tools could be so stinking cute! Am I right!?

Do you buy certain power tools because they’re pretty? Have you ever done yard work in a dress? Is that just me? I thought so…

West Michigan Wednesday: “Hospitality Suite” at The Howmet Playhouse

One of the things I love most about my home is the location! I love living in West Michigan and enjoy many activities around town. I wanted to create a series that explores some of the great things that this area has to offer.

WMW

This weekend be sure to check out “Hospitality Suite” at the Historic Howmet Playhouse in Whitehall. This show is part of the Howmet Playhouse Summer season so it only runs one weekend, August 21-23.

howmet

Here is the blurb from their website:

“In a small hotel room high above Wichita, Kansas, conflicting notions of character, salesmanship, honesty, religion, and love simmer until they boil over as two experienced salesmen and a young research engineer await a CEO whose visit to their modest Hospitality Suite could save their company from ruin.”

This is actually the last show of the summer season. Wow! It flew by so fast! Hopefully you had a chance to check out some of the other wonderful productions at The Howmet this summer. I know I had a great time at the playhouse!
